Hatchery Statistics

We’ve been operating since 2019. During the season 2021/22 we welcomed our first international volunteers and interns. Our expenses for paying the local egg collectors are covered by the participation fees, by nest sponsorships and by donations from the german NGO <MSV Nicaragua>.

The 3 sea turtle species we work with

The main species found on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast is the Olive Ridley Turtle (“Paslama”) and around 90 % of our nests originate from that species! Olive Ridleys are listed as <vulnerable> on a global scale by the IUCN Red List.
Their population is decreasing at an unknown rate; they are still quite abundant compared to other sea turtle populations but their eggs have been heavily commercialized in Nicaragua over the past decades with poaching levels reaching 100%.

From time to time we also get hold of nests from other species. These include the very rare, critically endangered Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Turtle and the uncommon Black Turtle, which is the Central American/Pacific variety of the Green Turtle.
